The Moja Drawsting Backpack - Blue
We’ve combined the vibrant African wax print with a soft and textured leather to create a unique drawstring backpack we’ve named Moja (a word used in Tsotsitaal – South African slang – meaning good or alright, i.e "it's all good").
The most widely recognised African textile actually has its origins in Java Island, Indonesia.
Dutch Wax Prints (also known as African wax prints, Ankara, or liputa) has become the world-wide symbol of African cultural identity, especially West Africa. It was originally influenced by Batik, an Indonesian (Javanese) method of dyeing cloth by using wax-resist techniques.
Ankara is different from Batik in that it is made through the Dutch wax method. This method was created by the Dutch during their colonization of Indonesia in the 1800s, with the goal of flooding markets with inexpensive machine-made imitations of Batik. Unfortunately for the Dutch, these imitation wax-resist fabrics did not successfully penetrate the Batik market because the method gave the prints a particular ‘crackle’ effect from dye bleed which was not well received by the Javanese who preferred their handmade products. To West Africans, however, this was a new, beautiful fabric with no comparison, and they took to it quickly when Dutch trading vessels began introducing the fabrics in those ports.
The Dutch wax prints quickly integrated themselves into African apparel. Women used the fabrics as a method of communication and expression. Many patterns began receiving catchy names. Over time, the prints became more African-inspired, and then African-owned by the mid-1900s. They also began to be used as formal wear by leaders, diplomats, and the wealthy population.
